Bring the best out of your hair, treatments decoded!

Do you ever look around at all the healthy, shiny hair on others that seems to cooperate so well and think, "Why can't my hair be that nice?". Or maybe you struggle getting your hair smooth because it feels so unruly. In my experience, I notice that almost half of people are not giving their hair all that it needs as far as nourishment. This could be vitamins, protein, light moisture, heavy moisture, sunscreen, and any combo of those!

I want to help educate you on some of the great treatments that are out there, and stress that by using them once a week or even less, your hair will look, feel, and behave better. Most of these treatments run about $20- that's not badfor something that you could get away with using twice a month!! Now sure, you can always pay me to do a treatment when you come see me.... but most of you don't, and those who do are always so desperate for one when they come in.

Here are a few winners!

Redken Color Extend Rich Recovery
Protective treatment provides deep conditioning to leave hair treated, manageable and vibrant.

Why It Works:
> Luxurious cream-gel formula provides deep conditioning
> Helps preserve the intensity of haircolor
> Leaves hair treated and manageable with highly reflective shine

Recommended for clients wanting to keep that just-been-colored shine and feel.

Interested? Take it to the next level with this:

Redken Color Extend Shine Enrich

Protect haircolor further while helping to seal split/dry ends, smooth flyaways, and impart a mirror like shine.

This product is AMAZING for getting healthy looking shine. A nice light serum complete with sunscreens.

Redken Fresh Curls Curl Recovery

This is a wonderful rich, rinse out mask. This is for someone who wants to replenish and restore dry, curly hair.

Why It Works:
> Moisture-rich formula deeply conditions medium to coarse, dry curls
> Conditioning and styling polymers revive parched strands and help restore elasticity and definition
> Strengthens to help prevent damage
> Provides the highest level of moisture in the Fresh Curls range
> Curls are quenched with healthy bounce and frizz-controlled shine

Redken Extreme Deep Fuel Treatments

Serious Damage control!! This product has been around for almost as long as I've been doing hair- and I swear by it. This treatment is for someone with highlighted, or highlifted hair who needs more than just moisture. When your hair is lightened, or has had many chemical treatments, it feels dry, has poor elasticity, dull, and is in danger of breakage. Most often people think there hair is just dry, but really it is missing essential proteins that have been lost during the lightening process. You can moisturize till the cows come home, but that moisture essentially goes in, and slips right back out. You need protein.

Why It Works:
> Helps restore very distressed hair back to its natural, healthy state
> Provides long-term conditioning and repair that lasts up to eight shampoos
> Hair is stronger, shinier and more manageable
> After 5 single treatments, hair is up to 3 times stronger compared to an ordinary shampoo alone in lab brushing tests

If you fall in this category, you may want to STRONGLY consider this long time favorite as well.

Redken Extreme Anti-Snap

Leave-in treatment gently smooths the cuticle and helps fortify hair that's prone to breaking, splitting or snapping off.

This award winning wonder can work miracles on your chemically or heat stressed hair. This is a perfect product to have if you want to grow out your hair, as it prevents breakage.

That's all for now! Lot of info, I'll make a part two in the future. FYI, these are all tried and tested products that I use regularly on myself or on clients.

Product Review-Lash Blast!

I recently bought a drugstore mascara for myself, and believe this is the best mascara I've ever used. Ever!

There are a few different variations: Length, Luxe(shimmers), and Volume. I purchased volume. There is no doubt the formula is wonderful, but what really makes this mascara is the brush. There are so many little teeth that allow for maximum coating and combing. No clumps, long, full, awesome lashes.

And for $7.00- come on!!

Inspiration Station!

Happy New Year all! I know I took a big fat break in posting..because I went to Europe for 3 weeks! Very exciting on many levels, but for fashion..yes, dear.

I wasn't as blown away as I had anticipated, but I did some good observing. I hit Greece, France and Spain on this trip. I will admit I had high hopes for coming back to the states with tons of new ideas, however I didn't really see too much new.. but I did notice some real individual style more frequently, especially in Barcelona. I noticed a whole lot of black clothing. Black on black on black. I get that, because it's Winter, and also because I have been digging really dark clothes lately as well, I've even been pairing black with navy blue, which I remember while growing up that was a BIG fashion no-no! Like wearing pink with red. Haha.

LOTS of boots were happening. Again, yes Winter appropriate- but I mean EVERYone had one boots that fell at least right below the knee. I'm thinking some over the knee boots would be pretty fun to have. I didn't see too many.. so I think that would be a good move.

As far as NEW, the baggy crotch pant was budding through Barcelona as well. Quite an interesting look I will admit..but definitely not flattering. It's something you would wear for comfort, to be daring, and.. well.. possibly if you are really tall and thin. : ) I was curious to try some on, Zara carried them, but my fiance was so repulsed that I just couldn't. My only regret. Hehe.

As for hair and make-up, there really was a lack of good make-up jobs, either nothing, or way too much was what I was noticing. I think we pull off taste full, clean make-ups a little better. I did see a bit of barbie blue eye shadow with pink lips around Athens and Paris.

Lots of cute short bangs, I really enjoyed that. I missed out on giving myself a haircut before I left, so I took Paul's face razor to my bangs and took care of business. Where I was most of the people had very dark hair naturally, so there was a lot more dark brown hair than I am used to. I really felt like I stuck out with my red head-ness! Paul as a dark blonde, and me red.. oh yeah, we did not belong! Barcelona was quite diverse though, we could have passed there: )

It was a great trip though, and even just getting out of the routine and searching for new ideas- whether I found them or not- really got my creative juices flowing!

Happy 2010!

Helloooo Shine!

Friday, November 27, 2009

Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy. And so does all the shine and sparkle going on in fashion right now. Sequins, metallics, sparkle- oh my! I am particularly enjoying the sequins and sparkle. I feel metalics, really, are always kinda "in", but the sparky-sequinness takes me back to my 10 year old self with my dance costume for performances. Holy sparkle!
I am recently the proud owner of ,what I've named, "TV tights". Basically they make your legs look like the moving, colorful, fuzzy, static from a TV not getting reception. Super huh!? Channel your inner 10 year old, it's doing wonders for me.

ANYwho. How does this pertain to hair and make-up? I will show you how.

Skin:
Go for a gold creme make-up to give your skin some lustre. There are also some cremes that are loaded with a warm iridescence. Can't find one easily? Try a gold lipgloss. Dewy shine!

Try a gold shadow just on the eye lid.

Hair:
Jazz up your color! Have your hairstylist try some golden ribbons in the hair either framing the face, or strategically placed around head. Pieces look thinner by the root, and wider towards the mod-bottom of strands.

Get your shine on with some shine spray, try Pureology Glossing Mist, it's lovely. For some shiney seperation, try Purology NanoWorks ShineLuxe.

Summer changing your make-up?

Friday, July 24, 2009

Instead of the summer heat melting your face.. fight back with an oil absorbing foundation.

It's very hard to avoid make-up meltage when it's 100 degrees outside.. but there are some things that you can do if you want to stay fresh.

Switch your foundation to a powder, or a mattifying liquid. ColorScience makes some really great powder foundations, that actually give coverage! If you know my make-up taste, you will understand that it means a lot for me to like powders as foundations, and this is the second I'm reviewing!! I was/am just very turned off by the mineral make-up boom. There was a lot of misuse, a lot of dry looking faces, and just too much hype for me. Now that things have settled, I've gotten over my disbelief, and companies have been constantly improving their formulas, I can come out with my little love for powder : )

Next up is the liquid wonder I've promised. I've seen this product as well, stand up to hours of wear, and heat. Make-up Forever's Mat Velvet+ is the one you've got to get to know. It goes on beautifully, covers wonderfully, and is buildable. I use this on almost all of my brides for looks that last. I use it on myself as well in the summer, and for events when I don't want any breakdown in my make-up. Live it, learn it, love it!! You can check it out at Sephora.

A few other little tips for keeping your make-up, use eyelid primer. Even if you aren't going to wear shadow, it will block the oils from building up on your lids, which can also mess with your liner or mascara. Urban Decay and Too Faced Shadow primers are hands down the best.

Don't be scared to carry a touch up compact with you as well if you aren't into switching foundations.

Happy Summer Lovin!!

And the award goes to...

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

Sunday night wrapped up Austin Fashion Week with the Fashion Award Show complete with Red Carpet for nominees and an awesome after party. Yours truly made the red carpet with a nomination in the Best Hair Stylist category. I did not take home the golden boot, but am still on a little high after being chosen as a nominee. That in itself is a great honor.

To check out some Fashion Week photos, my friend Jake Holt was the house photographer for the night and his pics can be viewed here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/smirchfa/3740193359/in/set-72157621752818004

I will say, as no one including myself new what to really expect from this week, it was pretty darn impressive. People really cam together, with an interest to not just be seen, but to meet one another and share their passions and interest in the industry. I have always been one who is not threatened by other artists, but wants to embrace hat we have in common. There is plenty of work to go around, it's much more fun to be friends and compare notes!

I really look forward to next year. May it be bigger, and better!!

Product Reviews!

Make-up testing!! Yay!!

Yesterday I did some new-kinda new product testing, and I have 2 items to brag about.

First up, Benefits brand spanking new, "Hello Flawless!". Yes Benefit has cute names for their adorable packaging, but this is a brand that also delivers more often than not. From the moment I touched this powder I knew it was a winner based on how finly milled it is. It goes on smooth, looks awesome, offers buildable coverage, AND has spf 15. Woo hoo! Why is this so special? Because many companies try to make this product, but none succeed in the "looking and feeling amazing" catagory.

Another Benefit must have, Hoola Bronzing powder. It won't turn you anything but tan.

Second rave, Tarte Lock & Roll Creaseless Eye Shadow Duo. When I first tried this a couple months back, I went for the boldest colors and thought, now this is fun! It's a double sided wand, one side a cream color that really does dry and lock into position(which is the true accomplishment of the product), the second end is a roller ball that dispenses a coordinating powder. The powder intensifies the cream, and adds more shimmer. The fun colors are exactly that, but recently I tried the more natural shades. Very lovely! Definitly could be a day to day staple, with the option to bump it up with the powder. Rosegold and Sandstone are lovely for a more natural look to brighten the eye, and smooth the lid. Patina is a beautiful fun choice, that really isn't too crazy.

Austin Fashion Week

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

Did you know that Austin is holding it's first Fashion Week this year? It's on July 13th-19th! Astin Fashion Week is featuring Photographers, Models, Hairstylists, Make-up artists, boutiques, and designers. There will be tons of related events all week long, and Fashion Awards at the end. With tons of huge sponsors and participants, it's guarenteed to be a hit. Check out the details here:

http://www.fashionweekaustin.com/

Yours truly will absolutely be hosting an event during the madness, come check out the shop and enjoy a drink on Wednesday July 15th! :

I am so excited about this week, and the prep to lead up to it. Anything that connects the fashion and beauty industry, and is a reason to get out and have fun is great in my book. Hopefully this is the first annual of many to come, with greater interest and event caliber every year. Come on Austin Fashion Week!

And who was the brains behind this all? Well I can't be certain of the whole brainstorming process, but Rare Magazines Matt Swinney seems to be doing a great job of leading the way. Way to go Matt!

Hairspray

Backlogged from:Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Follow my blog with bloglovin´

Ahhh hairspray. Some are afraid, and others know the true power, and diverse beauties, of the power in the can. Don't be scared people, hairspray most likely has a way to make your hairy life easier.

The volumizing, light holding type: This hairspray really doesn't offer much hold, but what it does best is dirties hair up, adding the slightest(build able) amount of grab, if you will. When hairs are fine, too soft, too slippery, seeming to blend into one form instead of showing off those fine ass layers you've had cut in... enter a lightly grippy, volumizing, flexible hairspray. The goal is to disperse evenly, commonly done by shaking hair upside down and spraying all over, thus creating a large cloud-do not inhale rapidly. I repeat, do not huff your hairspray.

Also, this spray works great before backcombing.

One to definitely try, training wheels or not, Redken Workforce 09 Volumizing Hairspray.

The "I want this style to stay" spray: This spray is for those who have a. given themselves a nice up do, b. given or gotten a great blow dry and want to keep the shape all day, c. stubborn bangs, or d. a desire to always "finish" a hairstyle. This higher holding hairspray can take your hair through day or night, give lasting volume, and sometimes even weather proofing. Spray in light puffs in areas desiring control. Two great sprays, Redken Quick Dry 18 Instant Finishing Spray, and White Sands Infinity Finish Spray(can brush through!). Both are humidity resistant!

The "You best not be movin" spray: Shellac, plaster, helmet head..haha. This spray has many nicknames, for it does all these things when applied with a heavy hand. This spray is what you want when you really just don't want the hair to move. I recommend for use in up dos that have to last hours+. Build able hold, so start light applying in small bursts. One to try, White Sands Stuck Up Mega Hold Hairspray.
